Four Years of Progress at the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community: 2004-2007
During the last four years, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has experienced continued growth and development in all areas of the Community. Between January 2004 and December 2007, the SMSC underwent dramatic and beneficial changes, many of which are detailed in our publication, Four Years of Progress.
With the approval of the SMSC General Council, there were additions and improvements to gaming facilities such as a third hotel tower and new hotel lobby, the Mystic Showroom, and the new Bingo Hall. With the opening of the new Little Six Casino, Indian Gaming at the SMSC returned to the original site where the first Bingo Hall stood for many years.
There was also significant development of non-gaming enterprises, with the opening of a second Shakopee Dakota Convenience Store and The Meadows at Mystic Lake, our 18-hole championship golf course. A second sheet of ice is under construction at Dakotah! Sport and Fitness, and the Mystic Lake Store at Mall of America was remodeled. Construction has begun on the Koda Energy project, which will provide electricity and energy in an environmental responsible manner with project partner Rahr Malting of Shakopee, Minnesota.
Mdewakanton Emergency Services continues to provide an invaluable service not only to the SMSC, but to local cities as well. The department now responds to an average of 200 calls a month, with about 60 of them being ambulance transports.
Major infrastructure improvements occurred with the addition of the East Village subdivision, a second water tower, a second water treatment plant, and a Water Reclamation Facility.
Increased health care offerings improved care for Community members, employees, and their families. New health and dental clinics, a pharmacy, a Wellness Center housing a physical therapy, chiropractic, and vision clinic, and an urgent care facility for Gaming Enterprise team members now offer services which were previously unavailable onsite.
